So what does that mean in practice? In typical indoor or sheltered environments, it performs just fine. Surface rust forms slowly and doesn't compromise structural integrity for decades. But expose it to salt spray, chemical fumes, or constant moisture – and you'll need protection.
The standard defense? Paint or galvanizing. A good coating system handles most outdoor applications. For bridges and highway structures, proper painting is routine and effective.
One thing to watch: The material's relatively low copper content (under 0.20%) means it doesn't develop the protective patina that weathering steels do. Don't expect it to self-protect in harsh conditions.
A572 Grade 50 is tough, not corrosion-proof. Treat it like any carbon steel – protect it where moisture hits, and it will last. Leave it bare in aggressive environments, and you'll be repairing sooner than you'd like.
