Choosing between laser and plasma for A572 Grade 50? The right answer depends on thickness and tolerance needs.

Laser cutting excels on thinner material – up to about ¾ inch. It delivers tight tolerances (±0.005 inches), minimal heat-affected zone, and clean edges that often skip secondary finishing. Cost per part runs higher, but you save on post-cut cleanup. Production speed is slower, though.

Plasma cutting dominates on thicker plates – 1 inch and above. It's faster, especially on heavy sections, and equipment costs are lower. However, expect wider kerf, rougher edges, and a larger heat-affected zone – meaning grinding or machining may add to your bill.

The numbers: For ½-inch plate, laser might run $2-3 more per part than plasma, but with zero edge-prep time. For 2-inch plate, plasma is roughly half the cost of laser – but factor in edge cleaning if the cut surface sees high stress.

Laser wins for precision and thin sections. Plasma wins for heavy plate and speed. Match the method to your material thickness and tolerance requirements, and you'll spend wisely.
