A572 Grade 50 Material Certification and EN10204 3.1

You've spec'd A572 Grade 50 for your bridge or building. You've ordered the plates. Then the paperwork arrives – a stack of test reports with a little box checked "EN10204 3.1." What does it actually mean?

Short version: It's a mill test certificate that says the material meets the standard. But there's more to it.

EN10204 3.1 is a European document type that confirms the steel's chemical and mechanical properties were verified through specific testing. Here's the key detail: the test results come from the mill's own inspection team – not an independent third party. The mill does the testing, the mill issues the certificate, and the mill certifies that the material complies with the purchase order and relevant standard.

When do you need a 3.1? If your project falls under European codes, or if you're supplying to a client with strict documentation requirements. Some engineers accept 2.2 (test reports without formal inspection) for non-critical work, but 3.1 is the baseline for most structural jobs.

Important distinction: EN10204 3.1 is not a third-party certification like 3.2. A 3.2 involves an independent inspector or client representative witnessing the testing. For A572 Grade 50, 3.1 covers about 80% of commercial applications. For critical infrastructure or specific client mandates, they may push for 3.2.

One practical note: If you're ordering from a mill that usually supplies to European markets, they're comfortable with 3.1. If you're working with a domestic supplier used to ASTM reports, you may need to explicitly request it – and possibly pay a small surcharge for the extra paperwork.

EN10204 3.1 gives you solid traceability and confidence that your A572 Grade 50 performs as advertised. It's not the fanciest certificate, but for most projects, it's exactly what you need to keep inspectors happy and your steel moving through fabrication.
