We ran impact tests on 1-inch A572 Grade 50 plate at -20°C. Results consistently hit 35-45 ft-lbs on the Charpy V-notch – well above the typical 20 ft-lbs minimum for bridge specs.
What does that tell you? This steel stays tough when it's cold. No brittle fracture concerns at normal winter temperatures.
The material absorbed energy cleanly, showing ductile shear fractures rather than crystalline cleavage. Thinner sections performed even better – at ½ inch, values climbed to 55 ft-lbs.
Good news for engineers: Standard production A572 Grade 50 often exceeds the minimum requirement without special processing. For most regions, it's more than adequate.
One catch – always verify actual mill test results. Different heats vary, and thicker plates may show slightly lower numbers. But overall, this grade handles cold weather reliably.
