316L Stainless Steel Overview

316L is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel known for its excellent corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides and acidic environments. It offers superior performance compared to 304 stainless steel, making it ideal for harsh conditions.

Its chemical composition includes chromium (16–18%), nickel (10–14%), molybdenum (2–3%), and very low carbon. The addition of molybdenum significantly enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The low carbon content prevents carbide precipitation during welding.

316L is available in annealed, cold-drawn, and polished delivery states. It maintains high strength at elevated temperatures and has excellent weldability and formability.

Common applications include chemical processing equipment, marine parts, medical devices, food processing machinery, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and pharmaceutical equipment.
